updates to an existing referral

New referrals require an appointment with your physician.
If you are looking to get a referral, please book an appointment with you physician to discuss your concern first.

Otherwise, this page is designed to provide you with information about how to follow-up on / change / update us on any existing referrals made to outside specialists by your physician at Magenta Health.

Appointment Management

FOllowing up on a referral / looking for an appointment date

When your physician sends a referral, they will also email you a notification of the referral details. Please review that email for specific follow up instructions as it will have the appropriate follow up instructions within.

  • Many specialists reach out to patients directly, and in those cases you will be instructed to follow-up with the specialist directly as well.

  • Other specialists only contact us, so in that case, we will do the follow-up until we receive your appointment date. Once we receive an appointment date, we will share it with you.

If you have lost this email (or if you didn’t receive it at all), please see the ‘Problems’ section below to let us know!

Cancelling / Reschedulinging a specialist appointment

To avoid any miscommunications with the specialist’s office, please contact them directly to make changes to your appointment. Their contact information will have been included in your initial referral notification email titled: “Specialist information”.

Referral Updates

MAKING UPDATES YOUR EXISTING REFERRAL

Contact Information: When your physician sends a referral, they will also email you a notification of the referral details, including the contact information we have on file for you. Please respond directly to this email with your updates. Please also reach out to the specialist directly to ensure they update their records accordingly.

Symptoms: If your symptoms change please update your physician by replying to the initial notification email.

In both situations above, if you no longer have the notification, you can send your update as a new message, but please be sure to include extra context.

redirecting your existing referral to a different specialist

Should you wish to have your referral directed to a different specialist, please provide the name, address, phone, and fax numbers of the specialist you would like to be referred to instead. Some specialists have multiple locations, so we ask that you provide all of the above information to ensure that your referral is directed appropriately. A good resource for finding specialist’s contact information is the CPSO Doctor Search.

You can provide this information either by using the reply link in your previous referral notification, or by initiating a new message. If initiating a new message, please provide context about which referral you are hoping to redirect.

Problems

If the specialist’s office has not received the referral

If you contact the specialist and they note they have not received our faxed referral, we are happy to re-fax it. Before we do, we ask that you ensure they have had time to process it - most specialists are receiving a large volume of faxes daily which may take them some time to process into their internal records. As such, before asking us to refax the referral, please clarify with the specialist if the faxes from the date of your referral have been processed yet. If they have, and they note your referral was not received, please send a message to our administrative team to advise of this.

If you have lost your initial notification email / appointment email

We are happy to re-send either - please send a message to our administrative team requesting this. As often we will have multiple referrals on file, we ask that you please include as much context as you are able (e.g. the type of specialist, name, location, etc)

If you have not been able to make contact with a specialist that you were advised to contact directly

If you have reached out to a specialist directly multiple times, and have not heard back within a reasonable time (e.g. 2 weeks), please let us know. You can use the response link in your original notification email, or initiate a new message. In your message, please include the name of the specialist, the dates you tried to contact them, your current phone number, and any other relevant information. This context will help us to provide accurate information to them when we attempt to reach out to them via fax.
