frequently asked questions (& answers!)

isn’t there government funding?

Long story short, yes, but your help is still needed.

We’ll draw an analogy to the public school system. The Ontario government funds roughly $13,000 per student annually. Despite these efforts, teachers oftentimes pay out of their own pocket for classroom supplies, and parents also contribute their time, attention, and dollars.

The government is doing their part. It’s not perfect, but they’re trying. The province spends roughly $5,000 per person annually on health care.

We’re doing our part by effectively voluntarily contributing more than $100,000 annually towards this work.

We’re asking patients who can afford it to help out as well. Just 1 in 100 patients contributing will make a material difference.

How will my contribution be used?

We absolutely promise that 100% of your contributions will go toward improving the shared software used by family doctors around the country, including Magenta Health physicians. We’ll try to use your contributions as effectively as possible:

  • supporting the efforts of volunteer software developers around the country

  • partnering with colleges and universities

  • unlocking matching government funds (E.g. NSERC funding)

  • hiring full-time software developers to avoid costly agencies and contractors

We will be publishing an annual accounting of how all contributions were used, for transparency purposes.

will not contributing affect my care at Magenta health?

We hesitated for many years whether to seek patient contributions towards this work for fear of creating a perception that those who contribute would receive better care.

Unequivocally, whether you contribute will not affect your care. We believe everyone deserves the same level of care.

do i need to be a magenta health patient to contribute?

Not necessarily! Our goal is to improve publicly-funded primary care for all individuals within our our community, our province, and to our nation beyond. All Canadian patients will benefit from these improvements. We would be grateful for your support if you are interested and able!
